Patients who undergo LASIK can achieve clear vision without the need for glasses or contact lenses. The optometrists at Eye Care Unlimited in the Bronx, New York, will assess whether you are a good candidate for the LASIK procedure.
LASIK, also known as laser vision correction, is a refractive procedure that reshapes the cornea to correct nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. Using targeted excimer laser energy, the LASIK procedure reshapes corneal tissue to correct refractive errors producing clear, sharp vision.
The expert optometrists at Eye Care Unlimited will perform a thorough medical evaluation of the patient’s eyes in order to determine if the LASIK procedure is appropriate. Candidates eligible for the LASIK procedure include patients who meet the following requirements:
LASIK takes only fifteen to twenty minutes to perform using only numbing eye drops to reduce any potential discomfort. During the procedure, a speculum is used to keep the eye open in order to clean the eye and place the numbing drops. A corneal flap is created with a femtosecond laser and then the excimer laser is able to reshape the curvature of the cornea by delivering pulses of light energy based on each patient’s prescription.
The LASIK procedure has a very short recovery time for patients. Medication may be prescribed to relieve any discomfort, but most patients tolerate this procedure well. The doctor will likely recommend resting at home for a few hours, with most patients able to return to work and other regular activities the next day. Certain strenuous activities need to be avoided for a least a week.
